Summer Food Service Program Information 2023

The primary goal of the Office of Food and Nutrition Services (OFNS) is to increase student achievement with the support of nutritious meals. For many of our children, summer vacation does not mean “FUN IN THE SUN” but rather an increased risk of hunger and developmental decline. Since good nutrition is essential for learning, learning should not stop during the summer. Our hope is to reach as many at risk children through our Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) as possible, so they may return to school ready to learn.

If you meet the requirements, your program may qualify to receive free breakfast and lunch meals during the summer months.

What is the Summer Food Service Program?

The SFSP is a federally funded program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is administered by the state and is sponsored by Baltimore County Public Schools, OFNS.

What is an approved site?

A site must maintain groups of 20 or more.

A site can be approved as either “open” or “enrolled.

An “open” site is one where at least half of the children in the area are eligible to receive free or reduced-priced meals. All children will receive free meals.

An “enrolled” site is one where at least half of the children enrolled in the program are eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals. All children enrolled in the program will receive free meals.

Who can receive meals at an approved site?

Children must be 18 years or younger to qualify to receive a free meal.

What is offered?

A cold bag breakfast and lunch is available. All food is prepared and delivered to your location by the OFNS’ staff.

When is the program available?
